I Need To Lose Weight
After Pregnancy
Don’t be fooled by articles and pictures in the media of celebrity mothers who appear to have quickly regained their pre-pregnancy figures. Remember, these people can afford to pay personal trainers, and will have nannies and other help with their new baby.
In addition, it is not healthy to lose any excess pregnancy weight too quickly. A sensible diet plan that focuses on healthy eating and aiming for a weight loss of 1-2 pounds each week is generally recommended. It might not sound much, but this amounts to a weight loss of a stone in less than two months. The usual rule of thumb is “nine months to go on, nine months to come off”.
You might also find it helpful to measure your bust, waist and hips regularly. Sometimes, even if the scales haven’t moved, you can find you have lost half an inch from somewhere (although if you’re breast-feeding don’t expect to lose any inches from your bust until you’ve weaned your baby off the breast). You may also find it helpful to use your clothes to judge how successful you’re being – there’s nothing more motivating than putting on a pair of trousers that once fitted you, only to find they’re now too big.
It is best to wait until after your six-week post-natal check before you start to exercise regularly again. If you exercised regularly before giving birth and you feel fit and well, you might be able to start earlier if your midwife or GP agree.
If you had a caesarean delivery, your recovery time will be longer, so talk to your midwife or health visitor before starting anything too strenuous.
The pelvic floor exercises the hospital or midwife will have given you are an excellent start to regaining your figure and the great thing about them is that you can do these anywhere: at home, at the bus stop, or in a queue at the supermarket.
Walking is great way to burn calories, so get out as much as you can and walk up and down stairs briskly. You probably go up and down several times a day, so think of it as good exercise.
